Plant-based dining is not a modern trend. Documented meat abstinence in China began three thousand years ago during the Zhou Dynasty. By 122 BCE, tofu was invented through Taoist alchemy as a staple of health and longevity. In the 6th century, imperial decrees institutionalised temple vegetarianism, leading to the Song Dynasty opening the world’s very first independent vegetarian restaurants. This culinary mastery peaked during the Ming and Qing Dynasties with Fang Hun Cai—imperial plant-based artistry that flawlessly mimicked the texture and taste of meats using purely botanical ingredients.
At Oriental Vegan, we stand on the shoulders of this profound history.
Our mission draws directly from early dietary therapy (Shi Liao), the medical master Bian Que famously advocated treating the body with food before prescribing medicine. Inspired by Bian Que’s wisdom, we have completely banned refined white sugar and use ancient whole-food date powder to naturally balance our master sauces. From the UK’s only gluten-free Sichuan menu to our upcoming ancient-grain innovations, we bring three millennia of culinary soul, food safety, and freezer-safe sofa comfort straight to your table.
